Code of Conduct
Berkeley Carnival Revolution (BCR) is a community mas band grounded in creativity, cultural memory, protest, and collective care. We believe mas is not only performance, but storytelling, resistance, and shared making.
Participation in BCR means respecting the people, labour, and ideas that make this space possible.
By joining the band, attending workshops, or participating in BCR activities, members agree to the following Code of Conduct.
1. Respect for Community
All participants must treat fellow masqueraders, facilitators, organizers, and members of the public with respect and dignity.
Discrimination, harassment, bullying, intimidation, or harmful language based on gender, sexual orientation, physical appearance, race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, disability, age, or any other identity will not be tolerated.
BCR strives to maintain a space that is welcoming and inclusive for everyone.
2. Collective Care & Safety
BCR operates through shared labour and skill sharing. Every participant contributes to the spirit and success of the band.
Participants are expected to:
Respect mas camp spaces, materials, and tools
Follow safety guidance when using equipment
Take responsibility for the care of their costumes and band property
Communicate with organizers when necessary
Mas is a collective effort. Support each other in the process.
3. Respect for the craft
Mas making is skilled cultural labour rooted in tradition, experimentation, and learning. Participants must respect the creative work of designers, facilitators, and fellow masqueraders.
Costumes, designs, and concepts developed within Berkeley Carnival Revolution may not be copied, reproduced, or commercially exploited without permission from the band.
Costume designs presented as part of Berkeley Carnival Revolution must be grounded in original human creativity and craft practice. Participants may not submit or produce costume designs that are generated primarily through artificial intelligence tools or generative image systems.
Artificial intelligence should not be used to generate costume concepts, illustrations, or design elements intended for production within the band.
Mas is made by people. The labour, imagination, and cultural knowledge that go into costume design are central to the spirit of Berkeley Carnival Revolution.
4. Intellectual Property & Image Usage
The artistic work of Berkeley Carnival Revolution including costumes, designs, performances, documentation, and imagery represents significant creative and cultural labour.
Participants and collaborators agree that:
Images, videos, and documentation of BCR work may not be used to train artificial intelligence systems or generative AI tools.
BCR designs, performances, or creative concepts may not be reproduced, replicated, or adapted using AI-generated imagery without explicit permission from the band.
Band imagery should not be used in ways that misrepresent the band, its themes, or its message.
Respect the work and the people who made it.
5. Participation, Age, and Assumption of Risk
Participation in Berkeley Carnival Revolution activities, workshops, and mas performances is voluntary and undertaken at the participant’s own risk.
BCR activities are generally intended for individuals 18 years of age and older.
In certain circumstances (such as family-friendly workshops, public events, or educational activities) participants under the age of 18 may attend with the permission and accompaniment of a parent or legal guardian, who assumes responsibility for the minor’s supervision and conduct.
Participants acknowledge that mas making, workshops, and mas performances may involve the use of tools, materials, movement, and public performance environments.
By participating, individuals accept responsibility for their own wellbeing and agree to exercise reasonable care for themselves and others.
6. Substance Use
Carnival is a celebration, and adults are responsible for their own choices.
If alcohol or other substances are consumed, it is at your own risk.
Participants are expected to:
Follow all laws regarding the legal substances and age of consumption
Know and respect their limits
Avoid behaviour that endangers themselves, other masqueraders, or the public
Remain capable of safely participating in band activities
Anyone whose behaviour creates a safety risk or disrupts the proceedings may be asked to step away from the activity.
7. Representation of the band
When you play mas with BCR, you represent the band and the community behind it.
Participants should conduct themselves in ways that respect the integrity of the band, its message, and its cultural context.
Actions that undermine the safety of the band or intentionally harm its reputation may result in removal from band activities.
8. Accountability
BCR management reserve the right to address behaviour that undermines the safety, integrity, or values of the band and/or mas camp
This may include:
Addressing issues through conversation or warning
Removal from a specific activity or event
Removal from the band in serious circumstances
The goal is always to maintain a space where mas can be created safely, respectfully, and collectively.
9. Upholding the Ethos
Berkeley Carnival Revolution exists to create mas that is thoughtful, political, joyful, and rooted in community.
Participants are encouraged to engage with the themes of the band respectfully, contribute to the collective making process, and honour the stories that mas carries.
